We did not arrive in Messina until 12noon; we had chosen to do a
Princess tour to a cliff top village, which is about 45 minutes drive from the
port. We travelled along the mountainous
west coast to Taormina, which is perched 700 feet above the sea. We had a guided tour of Taormina’s Piazza
Vittorio Emanuele and the main street of Corso Umberto, which is lined with
mansions, shops and cafes. Our tour
concluded at the Roman theatre at the far end of the
town, we then had free
time to meander back to our meeting point.
It is a beautiful village, shame about the tourists (as David kept
saying).
Instead of going straight back to the ship we went for a walk around
Messina, it was the day of Assumption (a public holiday), and the people were
getting ready for a big parade and festival later in the evening, there was a
great atmosphere.
The ship was delayed from leaving port by about and hour, this was
the best thing that could have happened as we were able to watch the parade
from the decks, there were hundreds of people dressed in white and blue pulling
a 40 foot Madonna that was on a sledge (no wheels), they wet the road in front
of her so that she would slide along more easily, it really was a sight to
see. As we pulled away from the dock,
fireworks started what a great ending to the day.
